Read why some people claim the "First shot of the Civil War" was NOT fired at Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. Instead, they say the first shot was actually the Firing on the Union Ship "Star of the West" off Morris Island January 10, 1861. Legend has it a Cadet at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina named George Haynsworth was the one who fired both the first and last shot of the American Civil War.
